SPECIFICATIONS

Trucks running under STAS specifications must meet all of the following specs.


1. TRUCK REGISTRATION

1.1 All truck chassis are spec. and carry an STAS s/n.

1.2 All owners must register their truck number prior to their race date. Only single or double digit numbers may be registered. Duplicate truck numbers will not be allowed. Starting in the 2001 season, owners to have a registered number and who have competed during the season in the prior year, will have until January 1st of the following year to re-register and retain their number. After January 1st, non-registered numbers will become available to all owners on a first-come, first-serve basis.

1.3 All trucks must display the assigned owner number. All trucks will have the number on both doors, clearly readable at least 22 inches in height and on the roof at least 16 inches in height. Additionally, a 5 inch number on right front bumper and right rear bumper is required.

1.4 No duplicate numbers are allowed.

1.5 STAS will not assign triple digit truck numbers but reserves the right to issue such numbers on a single event basis if necessary.

1.6 Primary truck base color must be in high contrast to the number color to maximize visibility as well as to assist scorers.


2. SERIES SPONSOR IDENTIFICATION

2.1 STAS reserves the right to require sponsor decals on trucks.

2.2 The space on the fender from the door number to the front of the truck will be reserved for STAS series sponsors decals. Absolutely no unapproved decals or lettering may be displayed on this area of the race truck.

2.3 STAS reserves the right to place a series sponsor decal on the windshield or visor.

2.4 STAS reserves the right to require sponsor patches on driver suits and crew uniforms.

2.5 The above decals must be on race vehicles prior to race to be eligible for points and purse awards.


3. INSPECTION

3.1 Prior to entering a STAS sanctioned event, a preliminary inspection of the truck will be conducted by a STAS official. A preliminary inspection is for the purpose of insuring general compliance with the specifications contained herein and all safety equipment is present and in working order. To pass the preliminary inspection does not insure the truck's compliance with all aspects of the specifications. Each driver and owner is responsible for strict compliance with all rules, regulations, procedures, and specifications.

3.2 Inspections Defined

3.2a Trucks
* Trucks will be inspected prior to each event.
* Safety related items must be fixed before the truck will be allowed on the track.
* Trucks will be inspected again prior to the main event and will be held in a quarantine area until the race time.
* There will be a designated tech area. Teams must bring their trucks to this area. The inspectors will not come to you.
* Any part or dimension of the truck may be inspected at any time.

3.2b Safety Equipment
* Driver safety equipment may be inspected at any time.
* Truck safety equipment will be inspected at every event.
* Pit safety equipment will be inspected at every event.

3.2c Random Inspection
* Any truck may be inspected at any time by track officials without written notice.

3.2d Post-Race Inspection
* After each feature event, all trucks will be instructed to report directly to an assigned area for post-race inspection.


4. SPECS. BODY

4.1 Any 1996 or newer Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, or Dodge ½-ton.

4.2 No extended cab, step side, El Camino, or Ranchero body styles allowed.

4.3 After market bodies from approved manufacturers must be used. Approval must be obtained
from STAS to consider any other after-market body, nose, or tail.

4.4 Only approved manufacturers are:    FIVE STAR BODIES


5. SPECS. APPEARANCE

5.1 Frame height 4" minimum with 112" minimum wheel base and maximum of 113".

5.2 A full Lexan windshield is required the top 8" must be painted black to simulate a visor. A rear window is required. Side wing windows are allowed, but window openings must be 20" minimum.

5.3 The maximum bumper thickness is .250". No factory bumpers will be allowed. Bumpers must be hidden behind nose and tail piece. Bumper ends must be capped or rounded to prevent unnecessary excessive damage.

5.4 No nerf bars are allowed on sides of truck.

5.5 Spoiler can be mounted only on rear deck, maximum of 7.5 " clear.

5.6 Spoilers may have one bend only.

5.7 No lateral and no vertical spoilers allowed.

5.8 Front air dam allowed; minimum height 4".

5.9 No holes allowed in tail gate or tail light.

5.10 All damage to bodies shall be repaired by the next event.

5.11 There must be the realistic appearance of head lights, tail lights, and signal lights in their original locations. This may be accomplished by decals only.

5.12 Tires must be centered in wheel opening.

5.13 Floor pan will extend the full width of cab with no gaps and minimal drain holes only. Floor pan on passenger side can only be as high as center tunnel (maximum of 10 inches tall) measured from driver's floor pan.

5.14 Full front and rear fire walls are mandatory and must extend the full width of the truck with no holes or gaps.

5.15 Maximum angle of front fire wall is 65 degrees.


6. SPECS. CHASSIS

6.1 A full perimeter coil spring frame is approved for use. All frames must utilize OEM lower A frames of equal lengths.

6.2 Wheel base measurement is a minimum of 112" and a maximum of 113".

6.3 Track width 65.75" maximum.

6.4 No leaf springs allowed.

6.5 No offset allowed.

6.7 Fabricated front and rear clip must be minimum .095 wall thickness 2x3" steel tube but must maintain stock-type coil suspension.

6.8 Frame must extend to rear of truck body.

6.9 Fabricated frames must use 3x4" or 3x6" .095 wall tubing minimum, on main frame rails.

6.10 Main frame rails may be no wider than 77" measured outside to outside.

6.11 Engine, transmission and rear axle must be centered in frame. Tolerance of 1/4" in either direction.

6.12 Engine crankshaft height of 11" minimum.

6.13 Any chassis mfg. may qualify by paying STAS a fee of $500. per chassis and meeting safety guidelines.


7. SPECS. ROLL CAGE

7.1 Minimum roll cage must be 10 points of 1-3/4" x .095".

7.2 Minimum of four door bars on right and four left side with two vertical bars between each horizontal bar. Lower horizontal bar must be attached to frame.

7.3 Cage halo must be near the roof line so driver has ease of entry and exit.

7.4 The only exposed roll cage bars will be the support bars.

7.5 Must have a minimum of 4 bars from cage to rear of frame; 2 bars from the top of halo and 2 bars from the middle area to frame.


8. SPECS. SUSPENSION

8.1 No rack and pinion steering allowed. Front steer chassis must be in stock location with OEM style steering boxes.

8.2 Front lower A-arms must be equal length OEM style. No fabricated lower A-frames allowed.

8.3 Upper A-arms can be tubular nonadjustable. Mounting bracket may be moved from stock location. Aluminum cross shafts okay.

8.4 Front springs must be equal distance from centerline of frame.

8.6 Minimum spring diameter is 5".

8.7 Only one shock allowed per wheel.

8.8 No coil-overs or coil over eliminators allowed. ####

8.9 Weight-jacks (bolt-type only) on all four corners may be used.

8.10 No steering quickeners are allowed.

8.11 Only two-wheel rear drive allowed.

8.12 Any cast steel spindle may be used.

8.13 Adjustable upper ball joints may be used.

8.14 Outer tie rod ends may be replaced with spherical rod ends. Tie rod sleeves must be steel.

8.15 After market drag link allowed.


9. SPECS. BRAKES

9.1 Only four-wheel disc brakes allowed and must be functional; no floaters allowed.

9.2 Any piston cast iron or aluminum calipers allowed.

9.3 Howe or other aftermarket copy calipers are allowed.

9.4 No aluminum disc brakes allowed.

9.5 No grinding or lightening of brake components is allowed. (except to gain mounting clearance)

9.6 Maximum of two 3" cooling ducts to each caliper.

9.7 One rotor and one caliper per wheel.

9.8 Brake cooling fans are allowed.

9.9 A working brake light centered in the top of the back glass is required.


10. SPECS. FUEL & FUEL CELL

10.1 FIA approved molded or bladder type fuel cell is mandatory. A 22-gallon (US) is maximum. (To Be Announced) is the only approved fuel cell manufacturer.

10.2 Fuel cell may not be lower than 8.5".

10.3 Cell must be mounted in a steel canister securely fastened to frame behind rear axle.

10.4 Fuel cell must be centered in frame.

10.5 Minimum thickness of .024 gauge sheet steel will be required for fuel cell canister. The only holes allowed will be four drain holes ½" in diameter.

10.6 NO PERFORATED STRAPS. A minimum of two 2-inch steel straps must secure top and bottom of fuel cell canister.

10.7 Gasoline is the only fuel allowed.
10.8 No additives of any type may be added to fuel allowed.


11. SPECS. WEIGHT

11.1 Minimum weight of 2850 lbs. With driver after the Race.


12. SPEC ENGINES

12.1 Engines must match the body i.e. Ford on Ford. ###

12.2 Any 365 cu. in. flat top or dished piston configuration magnetic short block allowed.
No aluminum or titanium parts.

12.3 Heads will be spec. Brodex. Each set carries an S/N. No alteration allowed to these heads. STAS reserves the right to trade heads at any time.

12.4 Intake manifold will be spec. (to be announced). Edelbrock? ###

12.5 Carb will be 80540 or 4776 Holly.

12.6 All engines are subject to inspection at any time. Any engine found to have non approved parts will be confiscated and truck owner will be fined.

12.7 Headers may be used. Exhaust shall extend past the driver's compartment and may exit right or left side under frame. 3" minimum ground clearance.

12.8 Mufflers are not mandatory at all tracks. If used they shall not be altered from the original manufacturers specifications. A maximum of 95 decibel (dB) reading shall not be exceeded if used.

12.9 Engine setback is determined from the centerline of the rear axle to the rear of the engine measured at ride height. 91" is the minimum measurement. Centerline of engine must be of equal distance from left and right frame rails. No Tolerance allowed.

12.10 Cam is a spec Reed cam. part no. ###

12.11 Rocker arms minimum 1.6 maximum 1.65 ratio


13. SPECS. RADIATOR

13.1 Aluminum or brass radiators allowed.

13.2 No plastic radiators or side tanks allowed.

13.3 Must have a functional catch can installed.

13.4 No water-type trickle system allowed.

13.5 A fan shroud is required and must cover half the blade width and completely (360 degrees) encircle the fan blades.


14. SPECS. IGNITION SYSTEM

14.1 No magnetos allowed.

14.2 No crank trigger ignition allowed.

14.3 Spec distributor only.


15. SPECS. TRANSMISSION

15.1 Standard production transmissions which are cataloged and available through regular dealer channels. Tex Racing, Jerico, Richmond, Borg Warner, Ford, Saginaw and Muncie brands are okay. Any other transmission must be approved by a STAS official. No aftermarket clutchless transmissions allowed, specifically: Bert, Brinn, Falcon, Lane, Ernie Glide, etc.

15.2 Must have working forward and reverse gears; in addition to neutral position and must be able to be shifted by the driver when fully strapped in.

15.3 Maximum four forward gears.

15.4 Transmission coolers allowed.

15.5 Transmission must be centered in frame.


16. SPECS. CLUTCH

16.1 Single, double, or triple disc clutch may be used.

16.2 No cones or couplers allowed.

16.3 No drilling of flywheel for the purpose of decreasing weight.

16.4 Reverse mount starter may be used, but no accessories may be driven off the front of the transmission (example: oil pump, power steering, etc).

16.5 If explosion-proof bell housing is not used, a scatter shield, not less than 1/4 inch thick, must be installed over flywheel area. "Clutch-flywheel flexible housing safety shield" is approved for use. The shield shall completely cover any part of the housing exposed to the driver. On all bell housings, an inspection hole must be provided for easy accessibility and inspection.

16.6 Minimum clutch diameter is 7.25".


17. SPECS. DRIVE SHAFT

17.1 Drive shaft must have truck number on it.

17.2 No aluminum or carbon fiber drive shaft allowed.

17.3 Only two u-joints allowed.

17.4 Two loops are mandatory; one front and one rear.


18. SPECS. REAR AXLE

18.1 Quick-change rear end allowed.

18.2 Rear end units may be locked.

18.3 Mini or full spools or welded rear ends are allowed.

18.4 Limited slip unit or cambered rear ends allowed.

18.5 Rear suspension may be 3 or 4-link type.

18.6 All control arms must run forward of rear axle to frame.

18.7 Maximum length of control arms is 31" from center to center.

18.8 Control arms may be aluminum.

18.9 No torque absorbers allowed.

18.10 Panhard bar or J bar only allowed. No watts linkages allowed.

18.11 Rear track width 65" maximum.

18.12 Floater rear ends 9" only.

18.13 Wheel bolt pattern cannot be larger than 5-on-5".


19. SPECS. WHEELS

19.1 Only Bassett 8" or 10" steel wheel allowed.

19.2 Only 3", 4", 4 ½" and 5" offset wheels allowed.

19.3 No bleed-off valves allowed.

19.4 No bead locks allowed.

19.5 Wheel weights must be fastened by clips, glue, AND tape.

19.6 Wheels may not protrude outside fender wells.

19.7 No wide-five wheels.

19.8 All wheels must have at least five 1" nuts.

19.9 Must run same offset wheel on front both sides 4.5 in.
Rear 4.0 in. (Can not use wheels to offset chassis).


20. SPECS. TIRES

20.1 Approved new asphalt tire will be required. Approved compound will be announced. Tires are only available through tech.


21. SAFETY GUIDELINES

21.1 All seats shall be high back.

21.2 The driver's seat must be securely fastened to the roll bars by four 3/8 grade 8 type bolts with fender washers on both sides of the aluminum seat and nylock nuts.

21.3 Seat belts and shoulder harnesses of five point variety must be used and must be bolted with 3/8 grad 8 or better bolts to the roll cage structure only; NOT to the floor pan. Lap belts and shoulder harnesses are to be 3" in width and replaced every 4 years beginning with belts dated 1996. A date tag or stamp is required. Upper end of the shoulder harnesses must be securely fastened to metal supports at a point level to the driver's shoulders.

21.4 Driver side window net and mirror are mandatory.

21.5 A 5 pound Halon system is required with a nozzle in the driver's compartment and the other in the engine compartment. Engine compartment nozzle must be on the same side as fuel pump.

21.6 All safety equipment is mandatory and must be free of excessive wear:

21.5a Fire suit.

21.5b Helmet (meeting 2000 Snell standards).

21.5c Fire retardant gloves.

21.5d Fireproof shoes.

21.6 For the protection of the driver's feet, a boxed-in area with proper bars or similar protection is highly recommended.

21.7 Ballast weight must be securely bolted in place and must be approved by a STAS official. Minimum one ½" bolt per 25 lbs. All weights must be painted white and have truck number on them.

21.8 An onboard fire extinguisher is mandatory. It must be a minimum of 5 lb., securely fastened within easy reach of driver.

21.9 Each pit area must have a dry chemical fire extinguisher in good working order.

21.10 Positively no sharp ends or edges on bumpers, nerf bars, fenders or wheels.

21.11 Ignition switch must be clearly marked on/off.

21.12 IF ANY TRUCK DOES NOT MEET ACCEPTABLE SAFETY GUIDELINES, IT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ENTER COMPETITION UNTIL COMPLIANCE IS MET.


21.13 THE BATTERY MUST BE SECURELY MOUNTED IN A STEEL FRAME BEHIND THE DRIVER'S COMPARTMENT. BETWEEN THE FRAME RAILS.


22. MISCELLANEOUS

22.1 Rules are subject to changes in an effort to make these trucks more competitive.
